Japanese researchers, in collaboration with IBM, have utilized artificial intelligence (AI) to identify an astonishing 303 new geoglyphs within the Nazca desert, effectively doubling the total known geoglyphs in the region. This groundbreaking research was spearheaded by archaeologist Masato Sakai from Yamagata University, who highlighted the efficiency of AI in expediting the exploration process. By leveraging machine learning algorithms to interpret high-resolution aerial imagery, researchers were able to recognize previously overlooked figures, particularly those that are smaller and more difficult to discern with human observation.
The innovative approach employed in this study marks a significant departure from traditional archaeological methods, which predominantly relied on manual identification through visual inspection. The process proved to be time-consuming and prone to oversight, as experienced archaeologists tirelessly combed through extensive regions of the desert. The AI-assisted methodology not only accelerated the pace of discovery but also allowed for a more comprehensive mapping of geoglyph distribution within the expansive desert landscape. Within six months, the AI model was able to identify numerous geoglyphs that had eluded researchers for decades.
While the discovery of additional geoglyphs is exciting in its own right, it also raises further questions about the motivations behind their creation. The Nazca civilization, which thrived in southwestern Peru from 200 BC to 700 AD, left behind no definitive records explaining their monumental works. Some hypotheses suggest that the lines held astronomical significance or were created for religious purposes; however, such interpretations remain speculative at best. As more geoglyphs come to light, scholars are increasingly challenged to revisit these theories and consider new explanations for the lines’ existence.
