These autonomous flying devices offer innovative solutions for capturing and analyzing real-world landscapes in a detailed manner. They enable terrestrial locations to be reconstructed in three dimensions (3D) with precision and efficiency. In particular, a remarkable development has been achieved by researchers from Sun Yat-Sen University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, who have introduced a groundbreaking system called SOAR. This multi-UAV platform streamlines the process of aerial mapping, allowing simultaneous exploration and detailed photographic documentation of environments.
Published on the arXiv preprint server and slated for presentation at the IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) 2024, SOAR is designed to optimize the capabilities of UAVs in creating 3D reconstructions.
